Ethanol is a well know teratogen that can cross the blood-brain and placental barriers, and also interrupts or alters the development of the embryo or fetus at any stage of gestation.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) encompasses the continuum of structural anomalies and neurocognitive and behavioral disabilities associated with prenatal exposure to alcohol.
