Pulsos magnéticos para tratar adicciones / Magnetic pulses to treat addictions
En el periódico “La voz de Galicia”, Raúl Romar García publicó una nota sobre el uso en el Centro de Estimulación Cerebral de Galicia, España, aún experimental, del tratamiento de la dependencia al alcohol, la cocaína y otras drogas usando estimulación magnética transcraneal. El neurocientífico responsable del tratamiento, Javier Cudeiro, comenta que en las 12 personas tratadas hasta ahora se consiguió un porcentaje de éxito superior a 60%, además de que disminuyeron los síntomas de ansiedad así como el deseo de consumir (antojo, apetencia, regosto, craving).

Al leer “La voz de Galicia”, me acordé del estudio “Estimulación magnética transcraneal de la corteza dorsolateral prefrontal reduce el consumo de cocaína: un estudio piloto” publicado en 2015 por Alberto Terraneo y un equipo de investigadores. Ellos también encontraron que la estimulación magnética transcraneal redujo el antojo por consumir cocaína en un grupo piloto. Cada vez hay mayor evidencia de la efectividad de la estimulación magnética transcraneal en el tratamiento de los trastornos por consumo de sustancias. Ojalá que en el futuro esta herramienta terapéutica esté disponible para quienes puedan beneficiarse con su aplicación como parte de un plan integral de tratamiento.

In the newspaper “La voz de Galicia”, Raúl Romar García published a note about the still experimental use of the treatment of dependence to alcohol, cocaine and other drugs using transcranial magnetic stimulation, in the Brain Stimulation Center of Galicia, Spain. The neuroscientist responsible for the treatment, Javier Cudeiro, says that in the 12 persons treated so far, a 60% success rate was achieved, in addition to reducing the anxiety symptom as well as craving for drug use.

When reading “La voz de Galicia”, I remembered the study “Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex to reduce cocaine consumption: a pilot study” published in 2015 by Alberto Terraneo and a team of researchers. They also found that transcranial magnetic stimulation reduced the craving for cocaine use in a pilot group. There is increasing evidence of the effectiveness of transcranial magnetic stimulation in the treatment of substance use disorders. I hope that in the future this therapeutic tool will be available to those who can benefit from its application as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
