ISSUP South Africa, ITTC-SA and SAMRC - GATS-SA, would like to invite you to their upcoming Webinar Series on Tobacco Use in South Africa.
GATS is a nationally representative household survey of adults 15 years of age or older, conducted to enhance the capacity of countries to design, implement and evaluate tobacco control interventions. This webinar aims to discuss the successful implementation of GATS that was achieved for the very first time in South Africa in 2021.
This will be a three-part webinar stretched over Two Days.
First Session: Tuesday 25th October at 12:30PM South Africa Time | 11:30AM UK Time
The first and second parts would be presented on the first day of the webinar which is aimed at detailing what GATS is and its global significance, the experience of implementing GATS in South Africa as well as some key results from GATS-SA.
Second Session: Wednesday 26th October at 3:00PM South Africa Time | 2:00PM UK Time
The third part of the webinar to be presented on the second day of the webinar, will focus on discussing the policy implications of GATS-SA results.

Presenter:
Dr Catherine Egbe is a Specialist Scientist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She obtained a PhD in Psychology and Health Promotion from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Durban South Africa. She is an alumna of the prestigious Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, University of California San Francisco, a World Health Organization collaborating Center for tobacco control. Dr Egbe is a member of the Society for Nicotine and Tobacco Research and was a Fall 2016 Global Health Network Spotlight Winner. She is currently the Lead Investigator of South Africa’s first Global Adult Tobacco Survey 2021, tobacco endgame in Africa, and university students’ exposure to e-cigarette and hookah marketing studies. She has authored 50 academic publications including 43 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
Co-presenter:
Dr Sebenzile Nkosi is a Senior Scientist at the Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She also holds a Research Associate position at Rhodes University. She has a PhD from the University of South Africa. While her work largely focuses on men and masculinities within various cross-cutting fields, including substance use, mental health, violence, and HIV, she serves as the project manager for the GATS South Africa project.
