GETTING THE (TREATMENT) SYSTEM RIGHT

Key research on improving local alcohol treatment systems, mechanisms for establishing recovery-generating care with diminished resources. Starts with what has become seen as the ‘bible’ of recovery-oriented systems of care, highlights the surprising results of a US randomised trial, then addresses two key issues:
- How many drinkers should be in treatment? What we should the aim be and how to assess whether we have got there. Develops sophisticated understanding of a deceptively simple issue.
- Is payment by results the way out? Out, that is, of the apparent bind that services doing least well may also be least likely to open themselves to improvement. Does funding on the basis of pre-set patient outcomes counter-productively stifle client-centred practice, or stretch services beyond comfort zones?
