WHY IS THE ALCOHOL CASELOAD SHRINKING?
The steady decline since 2013/14 in England’s alcohol treatment caseload has worried Public Health England among others. Is it because need for treatment is declining too, or have austerity-driven funding cuts made treatment less accessible? As part of the hot topic released a week ago we analysed trends in caseload versus need, and in the adequacy of key referral routes for converting need into demand for treatment. Conclusion? “Something is increasingly going wrong in access to treatment for problem drinking in England.”
