The Multiple Health Effects of Marijuana Use

Report

In its first report for almost 20 years, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), has found the use of marijuana seems to be particularly connected to:

  • Breathing problems
  • Mental health issues such as psychosis, social anxiety and suicidal thoughts
  • The development of drug-dependence and progression onto other illegal substances, including heroin
  • The loss of attention, which can be permanent, as well as one’s memory and the ability to learn
  • Low birth weight

Another notable conclusion reached is that evidence points to a greater risk of unintentional overdose injuries among children in US states where marijuana is legal.
