A recent review published in the Journal of Adolescent Health that looks at the effectiveness of interventions for improving the well-being of teenagers has reached a number of significant conclusions. These include:
- Sexual and reproductive health education, advise on micronutrient supplementation, nutrition interventions, and intervention for substance misuse are all potentially effective ways for improving the health and well-being of young people.
- Most research into the effectiveness of interventions concentrated on improving young people’s mental and physical health, or substance abuse programmes, is carried out in more developed countries.
- Future studies need to focus on lesser developed countries.
- A consideration of issues such as gender or socioeconomic status ought to be considered as these can influence the effectiveness of interventions.
- It is also crucial to identify the best possible delivery platform for proven interventions to ensure wider coverage and allow an opportunity to reach more isolated and disadvantaged social groups.
