I am a Hubert Humphrey 2016/2017 alumni, universal treatment course coordinator, consultant addiction psychiatrist and a public health physician that works at the Centre for Addiction Treatment, Education, Research, and Advocacy of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria, from 2013 till date. The centre is a co-occurring substance use treatment 60 bedded male and 30 bedded female wards.
I got my medical training from Obafemi Awolowo University Ile – Ife, Nigeria and graduated in the year 2003. I specialised in the field of psychiatry with further specialisation in addiction medicine from 2007 – 2012 from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. In 2014, I was trained as a trainer for the TREATMENT Substance abuse treatment module. I got further addiction professional education through the Hubert Humphrey / Fulbright Scholarship training in Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment, Education and Policy from Virginia Commonwealth University in the USA (2016 – 2017); Certification in Tobacco Prevention, Treatment, Protection and Evaluation from the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit and Centre for Addiction and Mental Health at the University of Toronto Canada (2017). Additional qualification as an International Certified Addiction Professional (ICAP I & II) from the Global Centre for Credentialing and Certification(GCCC).
I am a fellow of the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology and a trainer of substance use treatment education for the United States of America Sponsored Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Program Basic level Universal Treatment Course (UTC).
I am one of the coordinators of UTC training in Nigeria and I have coordinated and participated in the training of over 428 addiction professionals at different stages of the UTC training from 2017 till date. I am a master trainer of the UTC and was invited to facilitate the national training in Gambia and Ethiopia.
This wide knowledge base, and clinical and training experience have placed me at an advantage to treat a wide range of patients/clients with substance use disorder and co-occurring mental illnesses. It has also enhanced my teaching style by being able to give practical experiences during facilitation.
My ability to see challenges as opportunities to learn, and develop an analytical mindset and efficiency has placed me in a position to adapt evidence-based processes into my clinical, research and training practices. My position as the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Program Universal Treatment Course national coordinator in Nigeria has given me the opportunity to be an advocate of efficient evident based treatment practice for varied levels of treatment organisations.
