Connections are Key: Unlocking the heart of relationship based practice - Rowan Anderson
Corra Foundation is a Scottish grant making organisation that funds charities who support children and families affected by alcohol and drugs. 'Connections are Key' is a research project that explored the importance of "relationships", aiming to identify elements of practice that support, strengthen and maintain positive relationships for children and families affected by drugs and alcohol. This qualitative research resulted in a report with recommendations that aim to influence knowledge, policy and practice so that practitioners, children and families are supported with compassionate and nurturing services.
The first stage of the research was a scoping review which gathered information on relationship-based practice. This included evidence from policy reports, academia and government publications. Secondly, an archive review was conducted using data (provided by charities funded by Corra Foundation) to review current practice and methods operational in Scotland. The final stage of the research involved qualitative interviews with practitioners and families across Scotland, which provided lived experiences of providing or receiving support. These interviews were conducted with children, families and practitioners. The findings show the importance of compassion, presence and trust in service delivery, as well as the importance of listening to children and families and including them meaningfully in decisions.
