Psychosocial factors associated with the use of psychoactive substances in adolescents in Pereira, Colombia

summary

introduction:

The use of psychoactive substances is a public health problem with high prevalence in adolescents, a situation that influences individual and social development in adulthood.

objective:

Determine psychosocial factors related to the use of psychoactive substances in secondary school adolescents and middle education of a public educational institution in the urban area of Pereira.

Materials and methods:

Descriptive study correlates with 235 students from a public school, between 10 and 19 years of age, who completed an anonymous survey that looked into the prevalence and psychosocial factors associated with consumption.

results:

Proper supervision of parents was found to be a protective factor against the use of psychoactive substances (p<0.05) (OR<1), schoolchildren are 6.5 times more likely to consume when related to friends who consume [OR-6,555 IC95% (3,147-13,653)], those who have relatives who consume, are 2.2 times more likely to consume these substances [OR-2,231 IC95% (1,292-3,852)].

Conclusions:

The use of psychoactive substances shows a high prevalence in the schoolchildren surveyed and the main related factors are to take higher grades and have family or friends who use psychoactive substances.
