Abstract:
- The Effectiveness of Telemedicine to Prevent Relapse among a Clinical Sample of Substance-Use Disorder Patients: an Experience from a Developing Country during the COVID-19 Pandemic - Kristiana Siste, MD, PhD
Background: In preventing the spread of COVID-19 during the pandemic, physical distancing results in psychological pressure leading to addictive behaviours. Our study found an increased number of 53.4% and 37.8% for adolescents alcohol and drug use, while the increased number of 25.7% and 20.1% for adults alcohol and cigarette consumption in Indonesia. Predicted to be a domino effect of difficulties in accessing healthcare services due to lockdown, we developed Tele-Indonesia Drug Addiction Relapse Prevention Program (Tele-Indo-DARPP), a CBT-based treatment module for SUD, delivered using an online video service.
Methods: Recruitment was done in a convenience sampling from the outpatient psychiatric clinic. Study participants received Tele-Indo-DARPP in addition to treatment-as-usual (TAU) in outpatient care or TAU only. The structure of the intervention was weekly CBT in a group for a total of 12 sessions, ~2 hours per session, through online video conference via Zoom application.
Results: Good retention and significant improvement found in domains of physical health, psychology, increased in the motivational and social relationship among experimental groups. 75% of participants preferred therapy in the form of telemedicine.
Conclusion: Tele-Indo-DARPP has the potential to improve treatment sustainability and reduce the treatment gap of people with SUD in Indonesia during the pandemic.
