Abstract:
-
A Case study of the treatment of methamphetamine use disorder amongst medical students in Abia State, Nigeria - Chiamaka R. Nwaoru
Rationale: Recently, methamphetamine (MA) has become the drug of choice among young adults in Nigeria. This paper presents the assessment and management of medical students involved in MA use.
Objectives: the objectives of the study are: To learn the narratives that encourage methamphetamine use, and to report the outcome of a combination of cognitive behavioural therapy, and family therapy in, sustained abstinence and relapse.
Method: The study involved 5 medical students admitted into the inpatient facility of a hospital and diagnosed of stimulant use disorder. Their age ranged between 21-29, all male. Data was gathered through in-depth interview. Treatment techniques applied cognitive restructuring, family therapy to enhance family support and prevent relapse. The study adopted the case study design and thematic analysis was conducted.
Results- All the patients reported that continued use of MA led to the onset of gradual psychotic symptoms. Abstinence was sustained across all patients at three-and-six months durations, following discharge.
Conclusion- The study shows that though medical students had some knowledge of the chemical components of MA, they still developed SUD due to repeated use and high dose. This provides evidence that a combination of psychotherapies could lead to sustained abstinence among users.
