Alcohol-related disorders are traditionally seen as predominately affecting males. New research has found, however, that women now consume as much alcohol as men and, as a result, are doing increasing amounts of harm to their bodies. The global study surveyed around four million people over the course of 100 years. According to the authors, this change in drinking patterns can be attributed in part to successful marketing, cuts in price, and the creation of sweeter flavoured drinks amongst other things. The findings suggest that public health efforts ought to pay closer attention to women and alcohol consumption.
