Communications & Marketing Officer
James joined ISSUP in January 2020 after a career spanning ten years working on communications within international development, policy influence and campaigning contexts. He has extensive background experience in developing and managing communications campaigns for national and international NGOs.
He began his communications career in the consultancy sector building and managing practitioner networks. From 2011 to 2013 James worked on audience development and research marketing for the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID). He was also involved in auditing communications strategies of DFID funded research programme consortia.
James has experience in evaluating communications projects having worked on the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie) evaluating policy influence plans with research teams across Africa. In-country consultancy experience included providing embedded communications expertise to the Economic Research Forum (ERF) based in Cairo, Egypt.
From 2014 to 2018 James managed communications for the international human rights and advocacy charity Forest Peoples Programme and went on to work with the marine conservation charity Surfers Against Sewage to design and launch an award winning grassroots community mobilisation campaign in the UK.
He holds a BA (Hons) in Middle East Studies and a Ph.D in Political Science from the University of Exeter.
