Nady el-Guebaly

Dr. el-Guebaly is Professor Emeritus, Department of Psychiatry at the University of Calgary, Canada, and the past Medical Director of the Calgary Health Region Addiction Centre and Program.

Dr. el-Guebaly is the past President of the Canadian Psychiatric Association and the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine, and Founding Past President of the International Society of Addiction Medicine.  ISAM activities include Senior Editor of the Textbook of Addiction Treatment: International Perspectives (2nd edition, Springer Nature 2021) and Chief Examiner Emeritus of the International Certification Examination.

Dr. el-Guebaly was also Board Chair and then Research Director of the Alberta Gambling Research Institute.

He is the Editor in Chief of the Canadian Journal of Addiction. Research interests have resulted in 300 peer-reviewed publications, 80 published editorials, 60 grants and close to 600 presentations.

In 2017, Dr. el-Guebaly was appointed to the Order of Canada for his contributions to the field.

ISAM Certification: 16 Years Chronology and Future Considerations

Since 2005, ISAM has provided a multiple choice examination to physicians practicing Addiction Medicine. 

Dr. el-Guebaly will present lessons learned, including:

  1. Design of optimally diverse multiple choice questions in ten sections.
  2. Selection of credible item options.
  3. Analysis of questions’ discriminative quality.
  4. Post-exam psychometric analyses.
  5. Process costs and selection of references.
  6. Administration safety and security considerations.
  7. Maintenance of pool of questions.
